Welcome to the 2015 Season!

We are a “feeder” organization for Oak Ridge High School. The objective of ORJT is to teach and develop all participants equally in football and cheerleading skills, while implanting the ideals of good sportsmanship, honesty, courage, loyalty and respect for one’s self and others.
ORJT Families,

As we continue conditioning, we all know the conditions predicted this week and is consistent with previous years of scorching temperatures.  While we may not be canceling all together, depending on current conditions, there may be a significant modification of conditioning regimens.  The VPs of Football and Cheer have and will continue to be in communication with each other and our Safety Officer.  Please pay close attention to emails, texts, etc. for any last minute changes or plans as this week will remain very fluid (pun intended).

Please take the following steps as we continue:

  • Educate your child - On the importance of proper hydration
  • Begin hydration early - Maintaining  adequate hydration throughout the entire day is equally important
  • Communicate - Kids should inform their coaches if they feel any symptoms of fatigue or dehydration
  • Bring lots of water - Not small hand held water bottles, they will go through them too quickly

Coaches have committed to paying close attention to your kids.  This week coaches will be overly cautious in regards to children’s complaints of fatigue or feeling overheated and coaches will be liberal with water breaks and rest cycles.  Each team/squad will also be provided water buckets with towels soaked in cool water to assist in reducing body temperatures.

If you have any concerns, please direct them to your Head Coaches or VPs of Football/Cheer,  they have committed to being very responsive to your needs.

Tips to proper hydration:

Throughout training – including before, during and after – players and coaches both must focus on maintaining adequate hydration levels. Drinking plenty of fluids and staying well-hydrated benefits onfield performance while reducing the risk of heat stress or illness.

  • How much should you drink before and after activity? Drink 12 fluid ounces 30 minutes before activity begins. After activity, drink every 20 minutes during the first hour to make up for fluid loss.
  • What should you drink? Cold water is the best fluid to drink during activity and allows for fast absorption. It’s a myth that cold water gives stomach cramps. Sports drinks work well after activity to help replenish lost electrolytes.
  • How much should you drink during exercise?Children under 90 pounds should drink 5 ounces every 20 minutes, and children more than 90 pounds should drink 9 ounces every 20 minutes.
  • Easy tip: A child’s gulp equals half an ounce of fluid. Therefore, a child 90 pounds or less should drink at least 10 gulps every 20 minutes.
  • What is the thirst response? Don’t allow thirst to be your guide to drinking. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.
  • What color should your urine be? Your urine should look like lemonade and not apple juice. Urine color can be a non-scientific indicator that the body is becoming, or already is, dehydrated.
Drinking liquids is a necessity. Players and coaches should keep water and sports beverages available during drills and training sequences.

Dehydration signs and symptoms include: feeling fatigued, lack of energy, muscle cramps, headaches, dizziness and thirst.

A New Safety Product for Football
Updated date: Tuesday, July 21, 2015 3:35 AM

Notice to all parents,

Player safety is our number one priority. Recently a new safety product came to our attention that we felt parents should be made aware of.

The GelDefender MAXPlus is a Gel-padded skull cap that is worn under a helmet and was designed specifically to reduce impact g-forces, providing an extra layer of protection against head injury. This product also provides significant cooling benefits according to their test data. While this is not an endorsement, we feel the product makes sense and the decision as to whether you want your players to wear it should be yours.  ORJT certifies all their helmets so they are safe but there are also many different accessories like this that also some benefits.

You can research the GelDefender including testing data at their website
